HESylation - Targets

  • Biopharmaceuticals

Key issues of biopharmaceuticals such as proteins, peptides, antibodies (antibody fragments) and nucleic acid based drugs are related to their low stability in the gastrointestinal and circulatory systems.
To address these issues, Fresenius Kabi has successfully established a broad spectrum of methods for HESylating proteins or peptides at several coupling sites. The increase in size by attaching HES polymers results in lower glomerular filtration rates and therefore in a longer half-life.
Accordingly, the proof-of-concept was clearly demonstrated for different therapeutic proteins.

  • Small molecule drugs

Small molecule drugs might benefit from an increase in water-solubility, which should lead to a higher bioavailability, an improved side effect profile and much easier galenic formulations.
Feasibility studies for HESylated small molecule drugs have been performed.

Overall, the HESylation technology platform together with Fresenius Kabi’s unique patent portfolio provides exclusive rights for specific
HESylated products, for example second generation protein drugs.
